LKCE 2013

Lean Kanban Central Europe is coming up with its third edition already. After being hosted in Munich in year one and Vienna last year, now Hamburg will welcome Kanbanistas from around the world. The location looks promising, the program even more so. Kanban is kept bare-to-the-bones minimal, the other side of the coin being a thrilling openness on topics and influences.

We will talk about the conflict between the non-linear nature of creative work upstream and the linearity of process models as shown on Kanban boards. Processes early in the value chain like

  • discovery of customer problems to solve,
  • understanding those problems and their context
  • and then shyly sstarting to solve those problems,

tend to be very non-linear and unpredictable. One example of such a process is Design Thinking, in which at each step one can’t predict if the next step leads forward to solution or backwards to deeper understanding. This bears in it a certain potential for conflicts regarding the mechanics of Kanban (how to map this to a linear board) as well as regarding mind set (“What the hell are these guys doing, aren’t we supposed to keep lead time down?”).

We want to make this conflict explicit, and also show the llimits of Kanban in this kind of work, but also solutions.

We are looking forward to two super intense days w/ new and known faces of the Kanban community! The conference, year after year, has been an inspiring highlight in content and a very casual and caring organization.
